Abel Xavier debuted for Est. Amadora, where he was later transfered to SL Benfica. While at the Lisbon club, he helped them raise the league trophy, but a season later, he was traded to AS Bari.

After his short stint at the Italian club, Xavier club hopped around Europe until he finally reached Everton from PSV Eindhoven. He played for Everton for 3 years.

Xavier was then sold to local rivals, Liverpool, where he stayed for two years. He was loaned to Galatasaray, and then went on to play in Germany and Italy.

In 2005, Xavier finally joined Middlesbrough FC to replace the right back spot left vacant once Michael Reizeger was sold to PSV. That same season, Xavier failed at a random drugs test, when he tested positive for drug use, and is currently banned until further notice.

This would not have been the first time Xavier was banned. He was previously banned for chasing a linesman in the Euro 2000 after his handball gave France a penalty. His initial ban was 9 months, but was reduced to 6 by FIFA.
